There are many different types of rainwater tanks that can be incorporated in architectural and building designs:

| Underground |

Here are some helpful tips to consider when planning the water storage in your design:
- Remember that 1,000 litres of water measures 1mᵌ and weighs 1 tonne - so think about space, aesthetics and structural requirements
- If access is difficult, think about bladder tanks or modular tanks (see table above)
- Multiple tanks can be interconnected to act as a single tank
- Rainwater tanks do not have to be on the same level if you have a challenging site.
- Where there are tanks on different levels, the general rule is to fill the higher water tanks first and have them overflow into the lower water tanks.
- Multiple water tanks do not necessarily mean multiple pumps
- Try to centralise pre-filtration where possible (to minimise cost and maintenance)
