Above or Below Ground Tanks? 5 Factors to Help You Decide

If you’re planning on purchasing a water tank for your home, one of the things you will have to decide on is whether to install the tank above or below ground. These two applications have their own benefits which will help you choose the best solution depending on the home’s location and available space.

To guide you in making the right choice, here are the five factors you should consider when choosing between above ground and below ground installation.

1. Available Space

One of the biggest factors that will help you decide is the availability of space in your home. If you have ample space for a water tank, then an above ground tank would be good and usually cheaper. If, however, you have limited space in your home, then it might be a better option to install an underground tank under your house, driveway, or deck. By doing this, you can save space and not worry about the tank getting in your way.

2. Weather

Above or below ground water tanks

Harsh weather would not be a problem for underground tanks as they are protected from it. Above ground tanks, on the other hand, would be vulnerable to heavy rains and extreme heat or cold conditions. These can have an adverse effect on the tank and can contribute to its deterioration over time and in turn can also affect the quality of the water inside it.

3. Surrounding Environment

When properly installed, underground tanks can be a good “set and forget” solution. Their rigid construction and structural strength allow them to carry the forces associated with being buried. Once buried they are protected from the surround environment. Above ground tanks on the other hand are exposed to UV which can cause them to deteriorate over time. If directly exposed to UV, the water quality may also be affected. But the team at Waterplex have a solution for this. Above ground tanks are also exposed to the risk of damage around the home because if they can be seen – they can be damaged.

4. Repair and Maintenance

Tanks installed above the ground are easier to maintain and repair. General maintenance or repairs to clean the tank or fix equipment can be performed more easily on above ground tanks. While underground tanks are better protected from the environment, they can be more challenging to access if servicing is required.

5. Installation

The installation of above the ground tanks is fairly easy as it doesn’t require excavation. Some of these also don’t need a pump as they can work with the help of gravity if there is enough fall on your property. Underground tanks though usually need a pump to extract water because of its placement.

Carefully consider your home’s location and your water requirements together with these five factors, to know which type of application is best for you.
