Water Switches
Rainwater Harvesting Control Switches - What happens when your rainwater tank is empty?

When you have a rainwater tank, then you know you are harvesting and using rainwater that would otherwise have gone straight down the drain.

But what happens when it does not rain for a while and you find you have used all your rainwater? This is a particularly important issue when you are using your rainwater in the home for things like washing machines and toilets.

How does a rainwater harvesting control switch work?

The good news is that there is a range of rain water harvesting control switches that are sold with rainwater tank pumps. A rainwater control switch has a sensor that sits inside your rainwater tank or bladder tank and senses that the tank is empty. When the tank is empty, it automatically allows mains water to flow directly into the home. It also ensures that the pump does not turn on when the tank is empty. That means your pump is protected from running dry (i.e. being damaged because it is running without any water in it).

A rainwater harvesting control switch can also be used for irrigation purposes in the same way. But you need to check with your local authorities to make sure you are not breaking any rules using it in that way or using mains water for irrigation when you should not be.

Check with your local authority or state government whether there are any regulations that might prevent you using a mains water control switch in an irrigation installation.
